We love a family owned and run winery, even more so when they have young kids just like us. Yelland & Papps is exactly this, run by Susan (Yelland) and Michael (Papps) who have been building the business with their little ones in tow.
They have created a lovely first-generation winery in the heart of the Barossa Valley, and have not only nailed the making of great wine but have created a beautiful family friendly cellar door experience.
There is plenty of outdoor space for the kids to run around and play games, with a tyre swing and climbing rope to boot. You can also feed the sheep and play a game of quoits rope ring toss.
There are rugs for the lawn where you can lay on and watch the little ones run around whilst you sup on a Vin de Soif, a blend of Grenahce, Mataro and Carignan. Yelland & Papps also have a Vermentino which will certainly be a favourite of ours during the summer.
They told us that they both love the European style wines and food, and that is reflected in their lighter style wines and food offering of toast sardines and lemon. For the kids they have sparkling orange or lemon Sanpellegrino and a Barossa Ham and cheese toastie!
If you are without kids, enjoy the soft leather couches and vintage furniture whilst they take you on their tasting tour.
To cap off our great afternoon, they also provided a nice warm bowl of water to heat up the winey baby’s milk, always good to meet fellow like-minded parents.
We loved all the wines, but it was the Vin De Soif that we bought a bottle of to take home. A delicious Grenache, Mataro, Carnignan blend. Yummy!
